Cameron Collins
Cameron Jamison (CJ) Collins, a 12th-grade student at Northwest High School in Greensboro, NC, began his cello studies at the age of 3.
CJ has competed in competitions throughout the U.S. In 2002, he was chosen from cellists around the country to perform in Minnesota with the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. He has also received several awards in MTNA performance competitions, and has been principal cellist of the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra, assistant principal of the NC Honor’s Orchestra, and principal cellist for the NC Junior High All-State Orchestra.
CJ is a member of the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra and Honors Quartet. As a member of these ensembles, he has received several awards for summer study and private lessons. In December 2008, CJ was selected as the Youth Orchestra concerto winner, and will perform the Lalo Cello Concerto in March. He has also received scholarships to the Eastern Music Festival and the NC School of the Arts summer chamber music program. During these summer programs, he has studied with Jonathan Kramer, Ken Law and Robert Jesselson, as well as attending chamber music coachings with Paul Statsky, Sarah Johnson, John Ravnan, and Janet Orenstein. CJ has recently received a loan of a German cello from the Virtu Foundation.
CJ’s teachers have included Zvi Plesser, Beth Vanderborgh, Michelle Keenan, and Leslie Alperin. He presently studies cello with Brooks Whitehouse at the NC School of the Arts. He has also performed in masterclasses for Gustavo Tavares, Bongshin Ko, Brooks Whitehouse, and Jonathan Kramer.
